journal club

Yesterday I gave a short talk in our journal club at ARI-HAS. The topic was article level metrics and some science 2.0 tools. It seems that hungarian scientists and PhD students are not that interested in this strange stuff about the interwebz and impact factor bashing. Four people attended (the organizer, the organizer’s wife, a visiting scientist from Germany, and one other guy) besides me. So here is the presentation.

Shame the others missed it. Like Woodstock, one day they will say they were all there!

In my biased opinion, I would say this made for an excellent presentation on a topic that all academics should be aware of.

More information on the PLoS Article Level Metrics program can be found at: http://article-level-metrics.plos.org and an example of a PhD syllabus based around this important topic is at http://niyazahmed.blogspot.com/2009/09/open-access-plos-article-level-metrics.html

thanks, i hope the attitude and the IF & publication number fetishism will change with time, as this is quite a huge problem at some hungarian res. institutes.

the second link is also interesting, we have some courses on scientific writing, etc, but i don’t think they ever touch most of the mentioned topics.
